Having just been on a recent motorbike trip to Hay-on-Wye, I was struck by how many self-help books are around – all offering a different perspective on levels of happiness, self-love, well-being, and how to live a great life. Many of these books shine different lights on the same thing, which is how to live on purpose, enjoying what you do and how you fill your time – both personally and professionally.

For me, my living on purpose was a kind of gradual epiphany – not a sudden light bulb moment – it has probably taken the majority of my adult life and I anticipate it will continue – as Mark Twain said “The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why”.

managing and inspiring people virtually

Insight Discovery training uses four colours to find your energyThere are things I do professionally where through training and coaching, I’m enabling people to be the best version of themselves – inspiring and motivating others through learning. Using great tools like Insights Discovery to enable moments of great clarity on your working style – using Insights colour energies. Back in March 2020, after an initial panic wondering how I could continue doing the work I love, came the design of a new ‘Managing & Inspiring People Virtually’ course and through Zoom, I’m training and coaching people as before – just remotely! Still remaining on purpose…

finding my purpose with dry stone wallingI’m often having a go at new things and had all sorts of plans for learning and adventures during 2020. I’m always on the lookout for different things to do – dry stone walling one year and another – climbing over the Sydney Harbour Bridge (that was awesome!)

a new purpose, the cockpit of a small planeOver previous years I’ve owned horses, competed and done riding exams, and run a Learning Series for the Riding Club. Ten this used to be my purpose, galloping across the fields on a powerful horseyears ago I swapped horsepower and learnt to ride a motorbike and I’ve had such fun touring and continuing lessons to improve my riding techniques. One of my plans for 2020 was a flying lesson and I managed to get into the cockpit before bad weather set in! Rescheduled now for sometime in the future!

the purpose of food and cooking, enjoyment

Lockdown didn’t seem to curtail my appetite for personal growth, so attending weekly ‘Covid Kitchen’ cook along sessions on Facebook Live, I improved not only my cooking skills but also some growth around the waistline! Thank you Stu – you are an inspiration! www.mindsettriangle.com

I’ve also bucked the national trend of 6 hours more TV per day during the pandemic (I don’t reckon I watch the TV for 6 hours in a month!) – finding my purpose in the celebration of V E Daygot up and out there. Worked really hard to redesign training to deliver on Zoom, spent good quality personal time outside as I’ve been driving less in the car, had a giggle on clapping nights, and VE Day – socially distancing in the street! I want to create a sense of fun in everything I do rather than waiting for it to come to me.

So here we see a consistent theme – learning, personal growth, self-improvement… despite challenges and lockdown, I’ve a black dog finding its purpose in chewing a stickstuck to my purpose and thankfully, with more consciousness now – in previous years, I smiled when I did certain things and just didn’t realise why!

my favourite purpose, motorcyclingMotorbiking is the physical representation of all my core values – having the freedom to explore new roads on an adventure, devising creative routes to get to a destination, having the hugest amount of fun on twisty roads, and being with people you love and knowing, all in all, I’m worthy of truly living my life on purpose.

So returning full circle to where we started – I absolutely fill my life with things I love. My values and purpose align and my whole reason for being is snapshot of EG People Development home pagesummarised on the home page of my website.
This is relevant for me both personally and professionally.

So back to Hay-on-Wye – I continue to read those self-help books – from Simon Sinek to Gabby Bernstein – they help to remind me of the importance of my purpose and the whole reason ‘why’ I’m here.
